In addition to being a café and guest house, Linha 22 is a mercearia, selling a selection of fine foods and wines for you to enjoy at home.
What foods will you be preparing for your holiday meals this season? If you are planning on the traditional bacalhau, potatoes and cabbage on Christmas eve, followed by Roupa Velha (literally “old clothes” – the leftovers) on Christmas day, then you may want a red wine, as this is the typical choice in Portugal to accompany any dish of bacalhau (dried salted cod).
Our top red wine picks from the Linha 22 mercearia include:
Casa de Sarmento Touriga Nacional 2011 Vinho Regional Alentejano – Touriga Nacional is perhaps the most well known Portuguese variety, and rightly so, with its intense flavours of violets and black fruits such as plums, bramble and blueberry, and firm tannins. But when it is grown in the Alentejo, it often shows a minerality as well, and this Casa de Sarmento is a particularly elegant example, with a silky texture and long finish.
Quinta dos Termos Vinhas Velhas Reserva 2011 Beira Interior DOC This quinta is situated in the foothills of the Serra da Estrela mountains, in the centre of Portugal. The wine is made primarily from a special selection of grapes from old, mixed-vine vineyards, with 10% of Syrah blended in, and has been aged in French oak. This year the wine was awarded a Gold Medal at the Concours Mondial de Bruxelles and Bronze from the International Wine Challenge in London, whose judges described the wine as “Peppery and savoury with a well balanced fruit dominated palate.”
Of course, both of these reds would also be very good alongside roast goose, roast duck, filet mignon or other game or red meat choices for your holiday meals.
If you would prefer a white wine with your fish dishes or turkey, or for an aperitif, Linha 22 has some wonderful choices such as:
ClochArte Vinho Verde Escolha 2014 DOC This is one of the new breed of vinho verde wines, made without petillance from a rich blend of Loureiro and Avesso grapes.
Quinta dos Termos Riesling Reserva 2014 Beira Interior DOC Shows the classic Riesling slightly smoky petrol nose, and refreshing acidity and minerality, with a smooth finish.
Casa de Sarmento Maria Gomes 2013 Beirrada DOC The grape known as Maria Gomes in the Bairrada region is also known as Fernão Pires in other regions of Portugal, and by any name is known to produce wonderful white wines with elegant aromas and tropical fruit flavours, refreshing acidity and balanced structure.
Any of these wines will be a pleasure at table, but perhaps the best serving suggestion for any wine is stated on the Quinta dos Termos Vinhas Velhas Reserva back label: Enjoy the wine in good company.
