The mercearia at Linha 22 has a wonderful selection of wines to enjoy in the café or to purchase for celebrations at home or with friends. For New Year’s Eve of course you will want a sparkling wine for your midnight toast, and we can recommend two excellent Portuguese sparkling wines, both made by the traditional Champagne method.
Casa Sarmento Moscatel-Galego Brut (non-vintage): Many of you will no doubt be familiar with the justly famous sweet fortified Moscatel wines of Setubal, but did you know the same grape fermented till dry produces some stunning table and sparkling wines? Casa Sarmento grows the white Muscatel-Galego variety at their property in the Bairrada region and creates their sparkling wine by traditional methods, with the first fermentation in temperature controlled stainless steel, and the second maturation in bottle on the lees for 9 months. The result is a wine with all the enchanting delicate fruit flavours of Moscatel delivered in a dry, crisp sparkling format.
Casa Senhorial do Reguengo, in the Minho, makes several sparkling wines, but our pick is the Bruto Rosé (non-vintage). This beautiful peachy-pink wine creates a luxurious velvety sensation in your mouth with its fine, even bubbles, and has a delightful clean acidity with both nose and palate of red summer fruits (strawberry, raspberry, currant). It will be a surprise to learn this is made primarily of the Vinhão grape, known for the strong Minho red wines of that name, but vinified together with some Syrah by classic Champagne methods it becomes something altogether different, which we highly recommend.
The Café at Linha 22 will be closing early – at 18:00 – on the 31st of January and closed on New Year’s Day.
We wish all our readers and patrons a festive, happy and safe holiday and all the best for the New Year. We look forward to serving you and enjoying your company in 2016.
